New Plains Review holds four different contests every calendar year. Each contest’s guidelines and restrictions are slightly different, so please read the submission instructions before submitting.

Alexander Posey Chapbook Contest

Closed

We are not currently accepting submissions for our inaugural Chapbook Contest. Check back in April for submission deadlines. Submissions will be read blind. Before you submit, please remove your name and any other identifying information from your manuscript. The chapbooks can be no longer than twenty-five pages. Any submissions longer than twenty-five pages will be automatically disqualified. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize, publication by New Plains Review Publishing Group, and five personal copies for the author. Upon publication, the author retains all rights to their poetry, but will not be financially compensated for any copies purchased after publication. There is a reading fee of $15 for this contest. The judges for this contest will be Dr. Iliana Rocha, Dr. Matt Hollrah, and Lisa Lewis.

Sherman Chaddlesone Flash Fiction Contest

We are not currently accepting submissions for the Sherman Chaddlesone Flash Fiction Contest. Submissions will be read blind. Before you submit, please remove your name and any other identifying information from your manuscript. contest is only open to fiction with a word limit of 1,250. If your piece exceeds the word limit, it will be automatically disqualified. The winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000 dollars as well as publication in the following edition of New Plains Review. There is a reading fee of $10 for this contest. The current staff of New Plains Review will be the preliminary judges for this contest. Dr. Constance Squires will be the final judge.

Sherman Chaddlesone Visual Arts Contest

We are not currently accepting submissions for the Alexander Lawrence Posey Speaker Series Contest. Check back in the spring for submission deadlines. This contest is open to visual art. We will select one winner, who will receive a cash prize of $500 as well as publication in the upcoming edition of New Plains Review. We will also select one runner-up who will receive $250 dollars as well as potential publication in the following edition of New Plains Review. We will also select an editor’s choice winner whose work will be used for the cover of the upcoming issue, and also receive a cash prize of $250. There is a submission fee of $5 for this contest. We accept up to five simultaneous submissions.

New Plains Review Short Story Contest

We are not currently accepting submissions for the New Plains Review Short Story Contest. Check back in the spring for submission deadlines. This contest is only open to short stories. We will select one winner and two runner-ups. The winner of will receive a cash prize of $500 dollars as well as publication in the following edition of New Plains Review. The two runner-ups will both win a cash prize of $250 and potential publication in the upcoming edition of New Plains Review. There is a reading fee of $10 for this contest.
